How to Treat a Sinus Infection

The symptoms of a sinus infection can resemble that of a common cold. But the difference between the two is just how long those symptoms last. The effects of a sinus infection usually last less than 10 days. However, people suffering from chronic sinusitis can experience symptoms for 12 weeks or longer.

The good news is that sinus infections pretty much always get better without much intervention. Here are a few things affected individuals can do to ease their symptoms.

    Drink a Lot of Water

The easiest way to flush the virus out is by drinking tons of water. At the very least, one should aim to drink 8 ounces of water once every 2 hours.

    Consume Foods with Antibacterial Properties

Eating foods like ginger, garlic, and onion can help fight the virus and ease symptoms. People with a sinus infection should also consider drinking ginger tea and adding raw honey to their diet.

    Expose the Sinuses to Steam

In addition to staying hydrated, it’s a good idea to take hot showers and breathe in the warm, damp air. Alternatively, one can also purchase saline nasal spray and a humidifier.

Use Warm Compresses to Ease Facial Pain

Applying heat can help ease sinus pain. To this end, place a warm, damp towel around the nose, eyes, and cheeks to soothe symptoms. This will also aid in clearing the nasal passages.

    Use OTC Medications

If home remedies don’t offer enough relief, ask a pharmacist to suggest an OTC treatment. OTC decongestants can help soothe symptoms of sinusitis by narrowing the blood vessels, which, in turn, reduces swelling and inflammation.

    Consult a Doctor

Most doctors don’t prescribe antibiotics unless the affected individual has chronic sinusitis or if the sinus infection is bacterial in nature. The primary care provider will be able to determine if the sinus infection is caused by a virus or bacterial and prescribe medications accordingly.

    Get Plenty of Rest

It takes time to recover from a sinus infection. So, in the meanwhile, make sure to get plenty of rest.
